It's been about 2 weeks and I feel like it's been 2 months. Despite all of the strange, sick, weird, and bizarre aspects of Chengdu and its dwellers, I am loving it. My lungs are blackened by the horrible pollution and I'm pretty sure I'm going into the early stages of severe Vitamin D deficiency but other than that, everything is just grand. How I got so lucky to be plucked from the world, only to land myself in an awesome city, with seriously amazing new friends, and a really cool job, I'll never know.
Crossing the street is a life threatening situation, taxi cab rides are a death sentence, and lunch time is a twisted game of Russian Roulette. I cannot communicate whatsoever. So far I know, "Good morning," "What's up," "No way," "Thank you," and a few choice cuss words that my mother wouldn't be proud of. But all of my friends are either Chinese or speak Chinese so I'm good.
Night time is fun. When I'm not in bed by 10pm with the complete series of pirated Friend's episodes that is. Going out here is loads of fun. Chinese people are funny. Drunk Chinese people are awesome!
As for the job, I'm really happy with it. Teaching one day a week to Jr. High Schoolers and then helping BDMJ develop their textbooks and workbooks for their new English program. It's a really good crash course in ESL teaching and I'm so lucky to have landed this gig.
So 2 weeks down, 5.5 more months to go. I'm really excited for all the shenanigans to ensue. I'll try and keep updating this so you, my beloved friends and family who I already so dearly miss, can keep up with me. I'll try and post as many pics as I can too. Oh, and I'll also try not to get hit by a scooter.
